Durham
An attractive university city with it's 900 year old castle and cathedral sited high on a peninsula along the River Wear. The castle and cathedral were among the very first World Heritage Sites designated in Britain.
The Norman cathedral took 40 years to build and was completed in 1133. The neighbouring castle is one of Britain's largest and best preserved Norman strongholds. Seat of the Prince Bishops until 1832 it now houses University College, the foundation college of Durham University, England's oldest university after Oxford and Cambridge.
