Filey and Cayton

Filey grew as a fishing community well before the Norman Conquest, and the fishing craft seen at the Coble Landing, flat-bottomed for beach launching, have their roots in the Viking longboats.
Filey Brigg is a jagged reef of lower calcerous gritstone protruding 3/4 mile at right angles to the bay. The Romans built a signal station above the Brigg, one of a series that stretched from Flamborough to Scarborough and beyond. They acted as an early warning system, for Viking invasion, relaying warnings by a series of beacons all the way to York.
