The foundation of the Augustinian Priory began about 1113 and around it grew a second community, the Old Town of Bridlington, which by 1200, was established enough to be granted a market and fair on Church Green. It grew to be a major trading area and the Priory one of pilgrimage after the canonisation of one of the priors, John of Thwing.
